John McCann, Co-Founder & Senior
Consultant

John M. McCann is an educator, facilitator and consultant.
His specific expertise is in leadership education, visioning
and strategy development for organizations, and conflict mediation.
As a Co-Founder & Senior Consultant of Emc.Arts, McCann
has directed numerous strategic planning processes for clients,
including the Maryland State Arts Council, the New York Theatre
Workshop, the DC Heritage Tourism Coalition, Baltimore Clayworks,
and the New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra. McCann facilitated
the community-wide processes leading to the development of
both the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance and the Cultural
Alliance of York County (PA).

McCann is a founder and co-director of the Institute for Cultural
Policy and Practice (ICPP) at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, VA.
In this capacity McCann has designed the Community Arts Leadership
Academy for the Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies
(MACAA); serves as lead faculty for the Orchestra Management Fellows
Program of the American Symphony Orchestra League; and will facilitate
the initial leadership seminar (Personal Renewal and Organizational
Change) for Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional
dance.
In partnership with Emc.Arts Principal Richard Evans, McCann manages
the Orchestra Forum, a ten year leadership and change initiative
of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation involving 15 of the nation's
vital orchestras. Evans and McCann, working with ASOL, researched,
designed the pilot program, and advise on the curriculum and faculty
for the Orchestra Leadership Academy, a program comprising 25 seminars,
forums, and workshops annually. Currently McCann is directing the
development of an online resource center for the Midwest Arts Partnership
(Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan), and the development of a Web
portal to executive education and lifelong learning opportunities
for the Illinois Arts Alliance and Foundation.
He has served as a member of the consulting team for a broad array
of clients including the Aspen Music Festival and School, Arts International,
and the 18th Street Arts Complex. He has facilitated planning retreats
and strategy development sessions for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival,
the Choral Arts Society of Washington, DC, the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival, Washington Ballet, Dance Place, the National Assembly
of State Arts Agencies (NASAA), Maryland Citizens for the Arts,
and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. For the NEA, McCann facilitated
the focus groups designed to inform the creation of the Challenge
America program.
Prior to his educational and consulting work McCann served in numerous
executive positions in the regional professional theatre. Since
1998, McCann has been the Director of the Graduate Program in Arts
Administration at Virginia Tech. His life long learning includes
numerous courses in leadership through the Harvard Business School
extension, and Systems Dynamics for the Senior Executive from MIT.
He is currently the Vice President of the Association of Arts Administration
Educators, and a member of the Society for Organizational Learning.
